Immediate Past Presdent Mike Gormley Killed In MV Accident

Our immediate Past President, Michael "Mike" Gormley was killed at about 7 AM on Thursday, July 14, 2016 on his way to work, while driving on Whitesville Road, Toms River. Mike had only recently turned 60 years of age, and was looking forward to retiring in September. A longtime Rotarian, he had been a member and Past-President of the Red Bank Rotary Club. He will be sorely missed and was always well regarded by the members of the Jackson Rotary.

Mrs. Gormley advised us today of the family's tentative plans for memorial arrangements. Mrs. Gormley said that much of Mike's and her family are still flying in from around the country. The Gormley family has decided that they do not want a viewing or a funeral service, since Mike will be cremated. Instead, they wish to host a celebration of his life. While the details have not yet been finalized, it is expected that the memorial celebration will take place on Saturday, July 23, 2016 . The location is expected to be the Forked River Presbyterian Church, Address: 131 N Main St, Forked River, NJ 08731, Phone (609) 693-5624 and the anticipated start time is 2 PM. An obituary is being prepared, and will have the finalized details.

Mrs. Gormley said that she is truly appreciative and grateful for the outpouring of support that has been given to her and her family at this time. She also said that she wants everyone to know just how much Rotary meant to Mike.

TOMS RIVER - Police have identified the drivers involved in a fatal three-car crash at 7 a.m. Thursday.

There were two parts to the crash, police said. In the first, 60-year-old Michael Gormley of Lanoka Harbor and 34-year-old Jack Kennedy Jr. of Jackson collided head-on after Kennedy crossed over the center line of Whitesville Road, according to police spokesman Ralph Stocco. Dawn Kavchok, 45, of Manchester, who was driving behind Gormley, tried to steer around the crash but could not.

Gormley died of his injuries. Toms River and Silverton EMS took Kavchok to Community Medical Center in Toms River and Kennedy to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Stocco said.
