All of the memorial scholarships are in tribute to beloved members who have passed away; this includes Mike Gormley, our immediate Past-President who was killed in a motor vehicle accident, while on his way to our meeting, about one year ago. Mike was beloved not only by the Jackson Club, but also by his previous Red Bank Rotary Club, as well as District 7500 overall. The Jackson Rotary has continued to honor Mike by having renamed our annual golf tournament the Mike Gormley Annual Jackson Rotary Charity Golf Tournament, taking place this year on Monday, August 14 at the Westlake Golf & Country Club, Jackson, NJ. |

The Jackson Rotary has once again made a sizable donation of $1500 to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Jackson. The focus of the Catholic based charity is to help those in need, which the Society has been doing since November 20, 1845, when the first organizing meeting of the Society in the United States took place.
Rotary members Tom Barchie and Luke Stango present check to St. Vincent De Paul Society
Society President-General Adolpe Baudon, in his Circular Letter of January 1, 1877, wrote:
"It is laid down in our Rule, and it has been always understood among us, that in uniting to serve our masters the poor, as St. Vincent de Paul expresses it, our object is not only to relieve material misery, a very laudable purpose in itself, but to aspire, especially, through the practice of that most sublime of virtues "charity" to render ourselves better and more fervent Christians, and to make our poor enter on the same path, if we have the happiness of succeeding."
Although the Society has a primarily Catholic membership and is based on Catholic spiritual principles, they provide assistance to whoever seeks it, without judgement or prejudice. It is for this general principle that the Jackson Rotary feels honored to be able to help the Society in their assisting our less fortunate neighbors.

For the last several years, the Jackson Rotary has supported the effort of the Eatontown, NJ based organization American Recreational Military Services (A.R.M.S.) to collect toys and other essentials for the children of active duty service personnel. We receive, from A.R.M.S., paper stars with the name and age, as well as the wished for toy or other essential gifts, for the child. These stars are then posted at the various locations where collection barrels have been set up, and those who wish to participate buy the gift the child has asked for; when the gifts are collected they are provided to the A.R.M.S. group for distribution to the children. Below are examples of Little Soldier fliers, as well as photos of some of the Holiday gifts supplied.

During our quest for a second home, for the evening meetings from 5:30 PM top 6:30 PM on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month, we tried Solo Bella Italian Restaurant, Chandler Road, Jackson, where we found the food good, and the wait service fine, but were sadly disappointed in the accommodations presented for our use, especially since we had spoken with the manager several weeks before, and told her exactly what we wanted, and was assured that would be no problem. Apparently, it was a problem, since we were caused to not only be squeezed into an area which was not accommodating to our meeting space requirement, but we even caused the restaurant to ask a couple, already eating their meal, to move their table in order to help the restaurant accommodate our seating needs. While we did not have to, since the issue was not our fault, we nevertheless offered the couple dessert on us--which they refused.
Since we were unhappy with the setup offered by Solo Bella, we decided we must try another location. Member Mike Goldberger mentioned a location right next door, Roman Italian Restaurant, which he stated had not only goods food, but a separate dining area which he could close off for our use.
Going over to speak with the owner, we found him to be not only very accommodating, and eager for our business, but also found that he is a former Rotarian, and someone interested in helping his community. Therefore, we will be having our next evening meeting, on October 20, 2016, .at Roman's Ristorante Italiano, located at 440 Chandler Road, Jackson, NJ.

As anyone who reads the newspaper can see, this problem has reached a critical mass in our state, and especially in our County and town. This program is presented by the Police and the PBA in an effort to help stem the tide of destruction being caused by these addictions to our young people and our communities.
Please--make an effort to attend. Even if your children are grown, you still have to be concerned your your grandchildren and other relatives.

Sunday, September 25, 2016 saw a bright, clear, crisp, sunny day filled with the laughter of nearly 100 adults, teens and youngsters enjoying themselves on the Kitay family farm, located on County Line Road, in Jackson. The farm, which has a large, park-like yard and an equally large stocked pond, has been provided by the Kitay family for the last several years for the Jackson Rotary Club’s sponsored and hosted Steven Kitay Picnic and Fishing Derby. This yearly event is designed to provide a fun and activity filled day for special citizens and their families. The day is in memory of Kitay family member Steven. Steven Kitay was the second of five children of Izak and Paula Kitay, Holocaust survivors, who settled and started the farm in Jackson. Steve Kitay was very community minded, and strongly supported the Handicapped Commissions efforts. Steven Kitay passed away in 2002. The picnic stated at 12 Noon, and continued until 4 PM. Near the end of the day’s events, which included a picnic buffet of grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, potato and macaroni salads as well as coleslaw, cold drinks and ice cream donated by Farley’s Ice Cream, judging of the days catch was conducted by members of the Jackson Memorial and Liberty High Schools’ Interact Clubs, who were on hand to help set up for the day, and help the picnic goers with whatever needs they had. The prizes included Biggest Fish, Smallest, Ugliest, Prettiest, and so on—in essence, every fisherperson received a trophy! All the attendees, the Interact Kids, and even the hard working Rotary Club volunteers, had a great time—and all were looking forward to next year’s event!

For several years, the Jackson Rotary Club has sponsored the Steve Kitay Fishing Derby and Picnic and has held this event on the Kitay Farm, which has since the inception of the picnic been generously provided by Peter Kitay and the whole of the Kitay Family, in remembrance of Steven Kitay. The Kitay family provides the picnic goers with an ideal setting of a quiet, stocked pond in a beautiful location. The special needs and handicapped attendees, as well as their families and fiends who also come, have always had a great time--and all of the participants go home a winner!
Besides the Jackson Rotary members who help cook and entertain the young participants, members of the Jackson High Schools' Interact Clubs also work hard in making this event a success., Without their help the picnic would not be as successful.

The Jackson Rotary Club held a enjoyable and winning day at the Sunday, August 21, 2016 meet of Monmouth Park Raceway. The event was held in the Dining Terrace, on the third floor of the Club House, along the window wall overlooking the track and the finish line. The ala carte service was delicious, and the betting fun--especially when there were winners. In addition, the 6th. Race was sponsored by the Jackson Rotary, and the race was watched from and a photo was taken in the Winners Circle, along with the wining jockey of that race.

On Monday, August 15, 2016, the Jackson Rotary Club hosted our 9 Annual Charity Golf Tournament, This year, however, there was one difference--the name of the event has been changed in recognition of the untimely death of our Immediate Past President Mike Gormley on July 14, 2016--just one month before this Charity Golf Tournament, Golf and this tournament were a large part of Mike's life, and we wanted to honor him by naming this event in his memory for now and forever. Additionally, we have put together the Michael "Mike" Gormley Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will go to a graduating Jackson senior high school student. Through our solicitation efforts for this fund, we have managed to get enough funding to start and continue this effort.
The tournament and the luncheon afterward were a great success, with around 80 golfers playing the fabulous course at the Westlake Golf and Country Club, and enjoying a fine lunch in that club's banquet hall. All of the raffle prizes were awarded, and several extra prizes were also given out, including 4 tickets to a upcoming NY Yankees game (which would probably make Mike cringe--he was a true-blue Mets fan) as well as several gift cards from the Westlake Pro-Shop. You will find a number of photos taken of the event in the photo album.

Several Jackson Rotary Club members attended this years Gift of Life Dinner, which reports on and celebrates the achievements of the Gift of Life Foundation throughout the world, operating on heart diseased children in Haiti, the Philippines, and coming to El Salvador, in cooperation with the governments of those countries and the generous donation of skill and time from medical specialist from across the US. District 7500 is part of a cooperative of Districts from throughout the US who have banded together to accomplish the providing of miracles for sick kids--and their families.

TOMS RIVER - One of the surviving drivers from a crash that killed a 60-year-old Lacey man is facing aggravated manslaughter and other charges, prosecutors say. Officers from the Toms River Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office's Vehicular Homicide Unit arrested 34-year-old Jack Kennedy Jr. of Jackson on Friday in connection with a July 14 Whitesville Road crash that left Michael Gormley dead. Gormley was driving his 2010 Chevrolet Malibu north on Whitesville around 7 a.m., and Kennedy was coming the other way in a 2000 Nissan Xterra, police said at the time. Kennedy drifted over the center line and collided with Gormley head-on. Dawn Kavchok, a 45-year-old Manchester woman, was unable to steer her 2015 Kia around the cars and collided with them, police said. Medics took her to Community Medical Center, and Kennedy went to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
Gormley died of his injuries.
"The investigation alleges that Kennedy was under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance at the time he caused the July 14 Whiteville Road fatal motor vehicle crash," said Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the county prosecutor. He clarified that the drug was "related" to opiates.

The Rotary Club of Jackson will be hosting its 9th. Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Westlake Golf & Country Club, Jackson, NJ; this event will be held in the Memory of Mike Gormley, our immediate Past President. Mike was tragically killed in an auto accident on July 14, 2016 while driving to the Jackson Rotary club’s meeting and then to work at Harmony Bank, where he was the Chief Financial Officer. Because of this horrific accident and his death, the Jackson Rotary has decided to specially dedicate one hole in the tournament to Mike Gormley's name, and solicit funds for an ongoing scholarship to be presented to a graduating Jackson Township High School senior. The hope is that enough money will be donated to this cause that the scholarship fund will be given such a start that the scholarship can be a continuing facet of the tournament in the future. Anyone wishing to donate to this scholarship fund can send a check to the Michael Gormley Scholarship Fund, P.O..Box 751, Jackson, NJ 08527. |

On June 23rd, 10 inches of rain fell in just a few hours in West Virginia, causing floods that were simply devastating. According to meteorologists, this was a "1,000-year flood" and the deadliest anywhere in the United States since 2010. News reports showed homes in flames as they floated down the s w o l l e n river, and the town of Rainelle was described as " l o o k i n g like a war zone." DG David has spoken to DG John Powell of District 7550 in West Virginia, and he told how many of the communities served by his Rotary clubs have been shattered. "Twenty-three people died, and two are still missing from the floods," he said. "Five thousand homes have been completely destroyed, along with numerous roads, bridges, schools, and libraries" Of course, we know something in District 7500 about the devastation that flooding can cause, as Superstorm Sandy is still fresh in our memories. The winds had barely died down from Sandy when we received help from Rotarians around the country, and even from abroad. I am therefore asking for us all to help our fellow Rotarians to show how "Rotary Serves Humanity" in West Virginia. 1: Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to our own foundation, the Rotary District 7500 Foundation. Mark your checks "WV relief" and mail them to Harry Welsh, 115 N. Church St., Moorestown, NJ 08057 2: We will suggest that District 7550 host a Global Grant to provide some long-term assistance, which we could support with some District Designated Funds, and this would then earn matching funds from The Rotary Foundation. . 3: Entire libraries-full of books were destroyed by the flood waters. Both schools and public libraries now have no books. We would therefore like to start a book drive for West Virginia. If you would consider being on a committee to coordinate this campaign, please contact PDG John Hammer, chair of our Disaster Relief Committee at 609.509.4414. For the public libraries, we need undamaged, unmarked books—no paperbacks or trashy novels, please! If you have a contact where we might be able to obtain school text books (all grades), please let John Hammer know. We will deliver the books at the end of July |

Figure 1 Pope Francis greets Rotary International President K.R. Ravindran at a Jubilee audience at the Vatican on 30 April, where 9,000 Rotary members were special guests of the pontiff. Thousands of Rotary members, motivated by a special invitation from Pope Francis, gathered at the Vatican in Rome on Saturday to celebrate a message of compassion, inclusiveness, and service to humanity. At midmorning, the group -- numbering some 9,000 members from 80 countries -- made its way through the congested streets of Rome, past the tight security surrounding St. Peter's Square, and settled into the area reserved for Rotary in front of St. Peter's Basilica for the Jubilee audience. Francis, a 79-year-old Argentine, urged the crowd of more than 100,000, which included members of the police and armed forces from around the world, "to build a culture of peace, security, and solidarity around the world." His message of peace resonated with Rotary members, including R. Asokan from Tamil Nadu, India. "His message about peace is about accepting. Rotary, which accepts all walks of life, can carry his message to all our clubs, therefore carrying his message to all our communities," says Asokan. Though Francis is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, his words often reach a wider audience. A poll published earlier this year found him to be one of the most liked and trusted world leaders. Rotary District 7500 believed that as an organization built on the premise of people doing good works for others, the Rotary should honor non-Rotarians who have displayed excellence in this pursuit. The Rotary Club of Jackson nominated friend of our club Glenn Sculthorpe, owner of Tilton Body Works, located both in Jackson and Lakewood, NJ.
Glenn, who is a member of the Jackson Kiwanis, is always ready, willing and able to help anybody who needs help--at any time. Whenever our club needs a volunteer, he is the first on line. He volunteers when ever our club has a need, no matter the weather or the time. Even though he is not a member, he is one of us. He also exemplifies Community Service, being a member of the Jackson Scholarship Committee, the Jackson Alumni Committee, as well as the Kiwanis, the Knights of Columbus, and several other service organizations.. he has also committed himself for the last decade to assisting the organizers at the annual Halloween Party for Kids With Cancer, held at the Millstone Elks. For all this and much else not listed, our club felt he was deserving of this award.
